Just like many businesses, COVID-19 has hit us hard economically. Calvert Hospice depends heavily on fundraising dollars to support our mission. We have had to put some of our upcoming events on hold and others have been cancelled. Our Shoppe for Hospice is closed, resulting in thousands of dollars in lost revenue. Memorial donations have fallen off due to postponed funeral services―a time when many would make contributions in honor of their loved ones. We anticipate that this will result in a potential loss of over $300,000, approximately 40% of our budgeted revenue for fundraising.
While Medicare and private medical insurance pays for our patient’s care, it doesn’t cover room and board fees. The daily rate is far less than the cost of a nursing facility or in-home care, yet it is still beyond what some patients can afford.
In 2019, 57% of our patients at the Hospice House paid a reduced rate. Some could not pay anything at all. The expenses that we needed to cover for these patients totaled $177,000. With COVID-19 causing so many to lose their jobs, we may very well have more patients in need of financial help this year.
